At Acton Academy Calgary Central, summer isn't just about keeping kids busy, it's about igniting their curiosity and building real-world skills through hands-on experiences.

Each week brings new adventures, from outdoor exploration to creative projects, all designed to help children discover their passions, develop confidence, and make lasting friendships.

Our learner-driven approach means every child gets to explore at their own pace while being part of a supportive community of young dreamers.

The Grand Finale: Children's Business Fair

An optional capstone experience where young entrepreneurs bring their ideas to life. From concept to pitch, kids learn to think big, solve problems, and present with confidence to a real audience of family, friends, and community members.

Discovering Your Dream

"Everyone has talents and interests worth sharing."

Campers will:
• Explore interests and strengths
• Discover ā€œbig dreamā€ sparks
• Begin imagining simple business ideas

Outcome: Personal ā€œBig Dreamā€ identified, initial idea sparks
Focus skills:
Self-discovery, curiosity, growth mindset

Week 2

Creativity and Problem-Solving

"Creativity can solve real problems."ā€ā€

Campers will:
• Identify problems they want to solve
• Brainstorm product or service ideas
• Design a prototype or service concept
• Share ideas and receive feedback

Outcome: Chosen idea, first prototype or service plan
Focus skills: Innovation, design thinking, observation

Week 3

Courage, Effort, and Resilience

"Big dreams take courage and perseverance."

Campers will:
• Practice trying again after setbacks
• Refine ideas with feedback
• Explore simple pricing and cost concepts
• Strengthen independent decision-making

Outcome: Refined plan, pricing decision
Focus skills: Resilience, risk-taking, learning from mistakes

Week 4

Sharing Your Story

"How you share your idea matters."

Campers will:
• Name the business
• Create branding (logo, signage, visuals)
• Write and practice a short pitch
• Build confidence speaking to others

Week 5

Building and Preparing

"We build better things together."

Campers will:
• Create final products or rehearse services
• Prepare their booth setup
• Practice handling money or tokens
• Improve their work through peer feedback

Week 6

Business Fair and Reflection

"Small actions can make a big difference.

Campers will:
• Participate in the Children’s Business Fair
• Run their business independently
• Reflect on growth and challenges
• Celebrate their summer journey

Focus skills: A previously read Big Dreams book revisited
Book focus: Reflection, ownership, celebration

Is this camp only for Acton Central learners?

No. Camps are open to Acton Central learners and the wider Calgary community.

Is the business fair required?

No. Learners can choose whether or not to participate, and activities are always age-appropriate.

Activities are designed to build week to week, though prior attendance is not required to engage or understand the experience.

Is this still a recreational summer camp?

Yes. Outdoor play, games, movement, creativity, and friendship are at the heart of every camp week.
